Sr. Margaret Sadler, SEJ, was the 2023 St. Philip Neri Award recipient at our Tastes of Heaven Gala in April. As a true Canadian missionary, she humbly felt uncomfortable receiving this honor. “I was just doing what I was mandated to do, what I felt called to do and what God wanted me to do. I don’t understand how I could receive this attention or acknowledgment,” the Catholic Register reported her as saying. She encountered the Sisters of the Child Jesus at a young age when her family stayed with them at the local residential school. The positive experience influenced her to join them when she was 17 years old. She eventually taught elementary and high school in Saskatchewan and BC for 27 years. In 1986, she switched to mission work among the Soto First Nation on the Hollow Water Reserve, MB, where she remained for 13 years. Later she went to Lynn Lake for 16 years. One of the many challenges Sr. Margaret faced was obtaining grants for the local church building, which was badly in need of repair. Careful never to impose any programs upon the First Nations and always open to learning their culture and spirituality, her primary motive in ministry was to be a loving presence among the people.
Congratulations Sister Margaret. Well deserved!
