Finally! After 3 years of not having our Annual Tastes of Heaven Gala, we got the chance to get together again……and what a barn burner it was!
Over 300 friends of Catholic Missions In Canada were able to gather and enjoy a 1940’s-themed event with entertainment by the Toronto All-Star Big Band. Biagio Vinci, our Culinary Advisor, created a scrumptious menu from that period which featured Waldorf Salad, Beef Wellington and Crepes Suzettes. All in all, a good time was had by all.
On this evening we also had 2 very special guests join us. The first was our Keynote Speaker, the new Archbishop of Toronto, His Excellency Francis Leo. For those of you who don’t know, the Archbishop of Toronto is also the Apostolic Chancellor of CMIC. Our second special guest was the 2023 St. Philp Neri Award recipient, honoured as Missionary of the Year, Sr. Margaret Sadler, SEJ. The diminutive missionary was on hand to accept this truly deserved recognition for her many years of dedicated work in the missions.
An event like this can’t take place without some special friends, our Sponsors. As the world slowly awoke from its COVID slumber and people started to attend such events, we didn’t really know how this Gala would turn out. CMIC had 2 specific goals for the Gala: 1) to earn $250,000 in net revenue for our Canadian missions; and, 2) to increase awareness by introducing CMIC to people who had not heard of us. We were close to the first goal, but with the help from our sponsors, we really succeeded in getting new people to the event, with close to 100 attendees who had never been to our Gala or were not aware of CMIC. There is no way we would have been as successful as we were this year without our Sponsors. On behalf of Frank Morneau, our Honorary Gala Chair, and Fr. David Reilander, we thank them greatly for all their support!
