MASS STIPENDS

Honour your loved ones—celebrate a birthday or anniversary—by having your Masses said in the missions. Your Mass stipend of $10.00 will go directly to the priest in one of our mission dioceses saying your Mass. It’s a wonderful way to mark a special occasion or remember your deceased friends and family while supporting our missionaries.

Masses are said within two months of receiving your intentions. We do not offer perpetual Masses because we cannot guarantee the time for your intentions. Masses are said according to the schedules of the different priests in our missions.

Please call  (416) 934-3424  or  1-866-937-2642  for payment by credit card. Mass cards will be sent as per your instructions and are available upon your request.

Annuity gifts will keep God’s Word alive in our missions for generations to come

Father Pat Murphy says a fellow priest encouraged him to start his annuities when he was close to 70.

It is a decision he has never regretted. In fact, he has several annuities. Now that he is retired, his annuity income helps to pay his monthly living expense as his priestly pension doesn’t quite do it. It has also allowed him to help his family, take his sister on a trip to France, and at the end of his life, support Catholic Missions In Canada (CMIC). In his words, it has empowered him. He credits our solid and efficient way of managing our annuity program and answering his questions. He says he just has to pick up a phone to get clear answers and wishes more institutions were like us.

Priests and bishops across Canada make up eleven per cent (11%) of our annuitants. This is a significant number as priests make up less than one per cent (1%) of our population.

These priests and bishops have chosen CMIC’s gift annuities to supplement their retirement income. But just as important to them is that their annuities will help our missionaries at the end of their own lives on earth. With their gift, they will leave a footprint that will keep God’s Word alive in our mission dioceses for generations to come. Consider the benefits that CMIC gift annuities give to supplement your retirement income: secure, tax-free income guaranteed for your lifetime, and…peace of mind.

Here’s an example of how it works.

Father Ed at age 75 reviewed the information we provided, consulted his adviser, and wrote a cheque for $20,000 to Catholic Missions In Canada. Father’s age entitles him to receive a monthly cheque of $88.50. This represents an annual annuity rate of 5.31 per cent. Father received his first payment directly in his bank account one month to the day we received his cheque.

In addition to receiving regular fixed payments which are 100 per cent tax-free for life, Father Ed also received a charitable receipt for $6,085—or over 30 per cent of his investment. This receipt will help reduce income tax he owes on other income.

How does CMIC benefit from this arrangement? CMIC invests Father Ed’s gift of $20,000 in a special annuity fund for his lifetime, expecting not only to have enough to make his monthly payments, but also to have enough left over after he has gone to his eternal life to benefit Catholic missions across our country.

Gift annuities can be obtained by donors over 70 years of age for their own needs, or by the donor for someone else—maybe an adult child, or family member who is a priest. Annuities are available for individuals or jointly for two related persons for a minimum of $10,000 cash or marketable securities.

Find out how endowments can provide for the most basic necessities of our missionaries

Paulette, Louise and Cecile gave their Mom a special Christmas gift a couple of years ago. Having known the work of our missionaries and their good works, they funded an endowment with Catholic Missions In Canada in her name.

What a wonderful testament to their Mom’s faith and to their Catholic family values. Their endowment is also a special gift to our missions and will be for long into the future. It provides an ongoing annual gift for the most basic necessities of our missionaries to help keep them going—food, electricity, heat, transportation. It also enables them to share the love of Christ with both the young and old in our mission communities across Canada. So their endowment is a gift that keeps giving. Their Mom, I think, would have been very pleased with her Christmas gift that year.

The longevity of an endowment is exactly what attracts many of our donors to this means of supporting Catholic Missions In Canada.

They like the idea that the principal of their endowment gift will stay invested while the interest earned will just keep coming year after year after year to assist our missionaries keep the Word of God alive in the missions. They realize that someday they will be gone and their outright annual or monthly gifts will no longer be available to support our mission needs, but through an endowment they can keep making their annual gifts.

Some endowment donors, such as the three sisters mentioned, like the idea of an endowment to honour a loved one or a person they hold dear. Other thoughtful donors establish an endowment in their own name as a testament to their Catholic faith and as a means to share their faith with those people living in our Northern missions.

Endowments can also draw other family members into supporting Catholic Missions. Bill and Molly Callaghan, former CMIC missionaries, established an endowment in their family names, and in subsequent years, their children, grandchildren, and even their siblings have added to their “family” endowment. We call it “the little engine that could.” It just keeps growing and growing.

An endowment can be created during your life, or at death through a gift in your will. Endowments can be established with a single gift or over five years with repeated gifts. Others have started their endowments now and plan to add to it later through a gift in their will. You can fund your endowment through a gift of cash or publicly- listed securities.

You can also direct the proceeds from your Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSP), Registered Retirement Income Fund (RRIF), or Tax-Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs) to create or add to your endowment. Yes, there are so many ways to give.

GIVE A GIFT OF SHARES (PUBLICLY LISTED SECURITIES)

Donate appreciated stocks, bonds, mutual funds and take advantage of tax benefits.

A donation of publicly traded securities is an easy and effective way to support our missions across Canada – to repair a church roof or to help purchase a vehicle for a missionary.  By donating shares, you pay no tax on your capital gains.

To make such a gift is easy.  Simply download our Letter of Direction form and follow the instructions. Catholic Missions In Canada will issue you a charitable receipt for the value of your shares at closing on the day of receipt or transfer. For your tax purposes, your receipt will be clearly marked as a gift of publicly listed shares.

Gift Loans

Through the form of a gift loan, you can make a gift now without worrying about needing your funds in the future.  Upon receipt of your gift loan, Catholic Missions In Canada will invest your funds and use the interest earned to support our Canadian mission work.  A formal charitable gift loan agreement will be drawn up between you and Catholic Missions In Canada. But if you ever need it, upon written request, you may ask for part or all of your funds back.  No questions asked.

In the event that this Agreement has not been revoked at the time of your death, the principal sum shall become the property of Catholic Missions In Canada and will be used to support our missionaries across Canada.  At that time, a charitable tax receipt will be issued to your estate for the full amount of your gift.

Gifts of Property (Residual Interest Agreement)

A residual interest agreement is funded by your principal residence or other tangible property that is given to the Catholic Missions In Canada, but you retain its use during your lifetime.

Gifts of RRSP or RRIF or TFSA

Retirement funds, like your Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs), Registered Retirement Income Funds (RRIFs), and other funds like your Registered Tax-Free Savings account (TFSA) are high value assets for most people. If you name Catholic Missions in Canada as the beneficiary, these assets can be excluded from probate. Also, the donation receipt issued to your estate can be applied against tax on the distribution of retirement funds.

The benefits:

  • You retain use of the fund during your lifetime and the remainder is transferred to Catholic Missions In Canada upon your death.
  • A charitable donation for the full value of your gift will offset 100 per cent of the taxes owed and any excess donation credits can be carried back to the previous tax year.
  • Your gift passes outside of the estate and you will not be charged a probate fee.
